Many contractors who perform permitted work in NYC must hold an active DOB contractor registration to file and pull permits. Without it, your filings can be blocked.
How HIC licensing fits in
Home-improvement work on 1–3 family homes generally also requires a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license — a separate credential from DOB registration. Many contractors need both.
Trade licenses
Plumbing and electrical work must be performed and filed by appropriately licensed master tradespeople. These can't be substituted by a general registration.
